If using Recovery Derm Shield (sticky bandage)

  • Leave Recovery Derm Shield on for 48 hours, but take it off if it begins to leak or peels away such that the seal is broken. The bandage is unique in that it still allows the tattoo to breathe while covered, so it can stay on longer.
  • When it comes time to remove the bandage, you may find it to be much easier in the shower. Using a combination of soap and the running water, grab the corner and slowly peel across the skin (not upwards) until the bandage comes off completely.
  • If you’d like, you can purchase more of the Derm Shield to reapply after the first one comes off. It also comes in pre-cut sheets if you don’t have a use for the rest of the roll.

If using Cling Wrap

  • Leave the plastic wrap on for a few hours after your appointment, then take it off and wash your tattoo with unscented antibacterial soap.

We personally recommend either of the following brands of soap:

Things to keep in mind

Don’t swim or soak your tattoo (showers are fine)

  • When you submerge your tattoo in water, it softens the tissue around the wound. This makes it easier for dirt and germs to penetrate the skin’s protective barrier and cause an infection.
  • In the same vein, excessive sweating from heat or exercise can also put your new tattoo in jeopardy.

Don’t pick, scratch, or touch your tattoo

  • Not only does touching your tattoo potentially introduce dirt and germs into the wound, but picking and scratching at the scabs will pull up ink that would otherwise have healed into the skin.

Wash two times a day with antibacterial soap

  • We recommend a plain unscented soap, such as Dial Gold, to use for keeping your tattoo clean. Apply and massage the soap on your tattoo with your hand and then rinse it off. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

When your tattoo gets dry, use unscented lotion

  • For lotion, we recommend against using petroleum-based products. This is because petroleum will form a full seal and prevent your tattoo from breathing, which hurts the healing process by allowing bacteria to grow in the excessively moist environment and preventing much needed external nutrients from reaching the wound.

We personally recommend either of the following brands of lotion:

Lubriderm

Hustle Butter

You’re all healed after 2 weeks, use sunscreen to protect your art.

  • Using sunscreen on your tattoo, especially here in sunny Florida, is extremely important! The higher the SPF the better. The Ultraviolet light from the sun will break down the pigments of your tattoo, causing it to fade much faster than if it were protected.

DO NOT expose your fresh tattoo to the sun!

  • After getting a tattoo, the skin barrier is broken, leaving the cells vulnerable to UV exposure. Moreover, you should not apply sunscreen on a brand new tattoo as it can damage and infect the tattooed area.
