Don’t swim or soak your tattoo (showers are fine)
- When you submerge your tattoo in water, it softens the tissue around the wound. This makes it easier for dirt and germs to penetrate the skin’s protective barrier and cause an infection.
- In the same vein, excessive sweating from heat or exercise can also put your new tattoo in jeopardy.
Don’t pick, scratch, or touch your tattoo
- Not only does touching your tattoo potentially introduce dirt and germs into the wound, but picking and scratching at the scabs will pull up ink that would otherwise have healed into the skin.
Wash two times a day with antibacterial soap
- We recommend a plain unscented soap, such as Dial Gold, to use for keeping your tattoo clean. Apply and massage the soap on your tattoo with your hand and then rinse it off. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
When your tattoo gets dry, use unscented lotion
- For lotion, we recommend against using petroleum-based products. This is because petroleum will form a full seal and prevent your tattoo from breathing, which hurts the healing process by allowing bacteria to grow in the excessively moist environment and preventing much needed external nutrients from reaching the wound.
We personally recommend either of the following brands of lotion:
Lubriderm
Hustle Butter
